Steve King: Record Store Day

Steve King: Record Store Day

Remember that few days before Christmas when you were a kid? School was finished, the house was decorated from top to bottom in tinsel and tat, for months the adverts on CITV had been like an Aladdin’s cave of possibilities, but by now your list was already with Santa at the north pole and a good pile of presents already sat under the tree so now the question was, which ones would you get? …. And did you make the right choices? By now there was a steady stream of good movies on the tv, including the Star Wars trilogy...

Three LP’s you’d recommend to someone getting into collecting? The Beach Boys 'Pet Sounds' - most versions are suitable but the 50th anniversary EU release from 2016 is a great starting point with this. Fleetwood Mac 'Rumours' - Especially if you can get the 2011 US release with the hype sticker showing 'Pressed at Pallas'.The Beatles 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' - Lots of versions available but I would recommend the Special Edition, Stereo, ½ Speed Mastered, Gatefold from 2017. Your first and your last gig? My first insight into music was as a child as my parents were both massive music fans and it was rare for there not to be music playing in the house growing up. My mum's favourite albums to play were Elton's goodbye yellow brick road, Fleetwood Mac's Rumours and Tears for Fears greatest hits while my dad enjoyed anything Genesis, Ian Dury, Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin. I loved listening to all of these as well and would regularly play things that were recorded years before I was even born, and still do to this day.          ...

I also fell in love with Mogwai in the late 90s. As I've grown older my tastes have mellowed into the more "indie" side of alternative music. Recent favourites include Okkervil River, Phoebe Bridgers and Bonny Doon. I also have a passion for modern country/americana with Jason Isbell, John Moreland and Nathaniel Rateliff...
