The show that follows across the next ten tracks is a cinematic adventure, evocative of classic widescreen soundtracks and sixties orchestrated pop, with a pinch of jazz and processed 90s noir beats. Behind Late Transmissions are David Balfe and David Hughes - two old pals who last played together in Merseyside’s post-punk scene. They’ve drawn on their wealth of music experience to create this classic- sounding album.
Balfe, playing with Big In Japan, The Teardrop Explodes, Lori and the Chameleons and others, went on to be a producer, publisher, and founder of both Zoo and Food Records (signing Echo and The Bunnymen and Blur, amongst many others.) He reunited with Hughes, his former band mate in proto-synth act, Dalek I Love You, out of a shared love for the orchestra-led classic pop of the likes of Scott Walker, John Barry, Dusty Springfield and Shirley Bassey.
Hughes' work post-Dalek included playing with OMD and releasing three albums on CBS in a collaboration with singer Thomas Lang. He transitioned into a highly successful long-term career scoring TV and film (including “Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels” and US No.1 movie “The Bachelor.”) Skills upon which he has drawn for this act’s technicolor filmic sound.
But the undoubted star of this album is the incredible vocal talent of sensational discovery Eve Quartermain, late of London and New York, before finding herself back home in Liverpool. This torch-singing femme fatale combines angry power with cracked vulnerability and a noirish teasing fatalism - hers is the pounding heart of the album.
